Top 100 DJ Mag 2019: Only 8 Women at list

It seems that the female DJ scene is making progress on the much-wanted list of DJ Mag's 100 Best DJs in the world, Charlotte de Witte and Peggy Gou were the two newcomers this year.

New blood

While 2017 has sixteen new entries, 2018 has only five. This year there were twelve new entries, including two powerful techno women, Peggy Gou and Charlotte De WitteOther names like Henri PFR, Solardo and Deniz Koyu have been in the game for a while and finally seem to gain recognition, at least in the top 100.

But notable among the new names are Illenium and Fisher, which reached 64 and 63, respectively. Illenium has long been eligible for the list, but it seems his notoriety has finally peaked. With major shows at Madison Square Garden and Red Rocks, as well as a third stellar album, he deserved this year more than ever. On the same note, Fisher has become an icon and his listing is no surprise.

Women remain minorities

Although the NERVO sisters climbed to 24 this year, being the best-voted female DJs of all time, four women reached the Top 100 DJ Mag in 2017. That number has risen to six in 2018. Now it is eight with Peggy and Charlotte additions. Better yet, with the exception of Miss K8, all female DJs climbed the ranks. In fact, Alison Wonderland is this year's tallest climber, climbing a staggering 52 places.

Strangely, or maybe not, at least one DJ - Rezz - is not on the list. This is not a surprise, as she doesn't have many international followers and her fan base seems less likely to vote for the top 100 overall. Still, its absence is entirely remarkable.

Brazilians are coming

Even though we still don't have a Brazilian female representative in the ranking, ANNAby the way, it's past time to at least debut. Alok has been eating by the edges rising 2 places to 11, followed by Cat Dealers who also rose 2 places (46) and Vintage Culture which unfortunately fell 28 places this year to 47.

The top 10 get even more shaken

According to yourEDM.com, this year features the top 10 most volatile the ranking has ever seen. With the exception of Armin van Buuren, all places in the top 10 have changed.

For the first time in so many years, Hardwell is in the top ten. As I mentioned in my opening paragraph, this was undoubtedly largely influenced by your lack of touring in the last 12 months. Marshmello moves to the top 10 and becomes the highest ranked American of all time in 5th position. Oliver Heldens also  keeps rising, surpassing the legend Tiësto, which is also in the top three for the first time in years.

David Guetta  returns to the top three, Martin Garrix  resigns his # 1 title for the first time in 3 years and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are back on top. What year!

The main stage is stagnant

While many artists have risen this year, many DJs on the main stage have fallen in the rankings, some for the second year in a row. Zedd, Alesso, Diplo, Deadmau5 and Kygo all fell for the second year in a row. With the exception of deadmau5, which is constantly campaigning against DJ Mag Top 100, the others took EDM routes in their productions.

On the other hand, Above & Beyond, Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Timmy Trumpet and Calvin Harris all had big leaps in their rankings.
